Ariana Grandes 7th studio album, Eternal Sunshine, is an excerpt of how people can misunderstand you. It serves as a that the judgement people push upon you is only based on what they see. There are many reasons why the album is important to me and to pop culture. The album interpolates the Jim Carrey film “Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.” The basis of this film consists of getting rid of the memories you had with someone, so you can forget them permanently. It is a sad yet powerful film that
highlights human emotion in many different ways, just like the album does.
The album, Eternal Sunshine, is personal to me for reasons that differ from the album itself. When I had first listened to it, I was not going through a divorce or facing home wrecking allegations. However, I was going through a tough time with my dad all while moving and starting a new job. We were constantly fighting and not really speaking to each other. Needless to say, it was a time where I felt lost amongst all the change that was happening. I also felt like I didn’t have anyone to turn to that would understand. This
is why the album means so much to me. It came out as these things were happening in my life.
The album that I have chosen shook pop culture given climate that it was dropped in. Ariana Grande was facing home wrecking rumors and was recently divorced from her husband. It is rumored that Grande was unable to publicly comment on the divorce due to legalities. However, Ariana Grande utilized a musical adaptation of a movie to convey her feelings. As a whole, the album discusses the nuances of being a woman trying to navigate being in the public eye. The order in which the songs are played signifies emotions of grief.
In current pop culture and media, we are still working towards removing ourselves from gossip and tearing women down. However, Ariana Grande was being ripped to shreds online and in the tabloids. It was not until she released Eternal Sunshine that people started to realize how they had gotten the story wrong. TMZ even falsified a testimony from her boyfriend's ex-wife and later came clean about it. The album begins with a question which is “how can I tell if I’m in the right relationship?” It also details how the couple tried to make their relationship work before calling it quits.
Every single song on this album has a significant meaning that can apply to many different contexts. There is so much versatility in the way that it relates to me personally. Whether if it is something that happened to me during or after the albums release, I always find myself turning to it. Eternal Sunshine is a piece of media that I still consume even after a year of its release. The significance of this album lies within self reflection and personal growth, something that I am constantly trying to understand.
